The Core Pocket Media Player (TCPMP) is an open-source video and audio player compatible with all the most popular codecs and multimedia file types.

Portable video is fast becoming the most popular secondary use for Pocket PCs, so making sure you have the right media player is now a priority for many Windows Mobile device owners. TCPMP is easy to use, very stable and loaded with a variety of features. TCPMP's main screen is reminiscent of similar programs on your desktop computer, with options to change aspect ratio, zoom and volume as well as more advanced controls such as video speed (10% - 200%), video driver, audio preamp and more.

One issue with playing video files on a Pocket PC, irrespective of which program you use to play them, is that there will be some lag or jumps from time to time. TCPMP's settings help you with this, allowing you to play around with different levels of quality and performance to help you guarantee the best possible multimedia experience. TCPMP is certainly a lot more customizable than most other Pocket PC video apps.

TCPMP is a free, open source multimedia player which we'd recommend to anyone who wants to watch video on their Pocket PC. That said, if portable video is your heart's desire, it would definitely be worth investing in a device built specifically for video playback which will provide much better overall quality.

mPlayer has always been one of the best and most popular media players for Linux, and the open source app now makes its debut on mobile platforms in the shape of this Windows Mobile software.

Although it's a stripped-down version of the original it still represents a great way to enjoy music and video on your handheld.

One of the best things about mPlayer is its support for a varied array of different media formats.

As well as the ubiquitous handling of MP3, AVI, WMA and the like, the program lets you tune in to streaming media and recognises all types of Flash video.

In terms of its user interface, the program is a little simplistic, though not in a bad way. In fact, I much prefer to have a player that's light yet practical, rather than some bloated app with loads of features you don't need.

Hence, you get basic options for locating a file, opening a playlist or adding a URL, without impacting on your device's memory too much.

If you're looking for a slick and simple way to handle all types of media on your Pocket PC then look no further than mPlayer.

Last.fm Mobile 1.4

For many people, Last.fm has not only superceded traditional radio, but also their MP3 collection has been left untouched for months, such is the power of the service. If you haven't tried Last.fm at all yet then you're probably wondering what the big deal is. Just try it. In fact, try it on your mobile so you can carry it around with you and really get a feel for it.

Though still in development stage, Last.fm Mobile replicates some of the functionality of the online radio app, allowing you to tune into the kind of music you enjoy wherever you go. The program furnishes you with the 'scrobbling' feature of Last.fm, which basically checks the songs you're currently listening to the most and automatically suggests tracks from similar artists, helping you to broaden your musical horizons.

Provided, of course, you have a Last.fm account, the application is a breeze to set up, and you'll be listening to some great tunes within a couple of minutes. However, because Last.fm Mobile is in its early stages of development, it's a little quirky in places and the interface isn't as slick as it could be.

In terms of functionality, the Pocket PC version of the software replicates both the scrobbling feature and radio streaming of the original, whereas the Smartphone version only handles scrobbling through Windows Media Player.

Despite its rather primitive nature, Last.fm Mobile is still great for enjoying the wonder of this online broadcasting revolution werever you go.

iPhone WMP Skin 1.0

Let's face it, it's cool, we all want one and if you say they're rubbish then you're just being jealous. I'm talking about the iPhone/iPod Touch, of course - a revolutionary product that has quickly become the most sought-after gizmo on the planet.

Obviously we don't all have the money to splash out on a luxury like this as we have mouths to feed or nicotine habits to keep up. So, an alternative is to just pimp your existing mobile device in order to make it look Apple's shiny new multimedia player.

This iPhone skin for Windows Media Player does just that, giving you a taste of what it's like to use the iPhone, on your Pocket PC. The physical resemblance to iTunes of the Apple handheld is pretty good and this one even includes video and album art.

Ultimately it's unable to replicate the cool functionality of the iPhone/iTouch interface, simply because of hardware restrictions. It's also only available for QVGA devices at present, although the developer is looking into the possibility of a VGA port.

You can flip effectively between portrait and landscape though.

If you want a feel of what the new iPod Touch player is like then this skin will help you apply the general look of it to WMP.

Poorlyduck Vista Suit

Having heard lots of juicy gossip and seen pictures of the new Windows Mobile 7 OS, I'm itching to have a play with it. Unfortunately for me (and everyone else) it's not due out until 2009. Until then, why not give your OS an overhaul by revamping the interface?

Poorlyduck's Vista Suit allows you to skin your Windows Mobile operating system to make it look like its bigger brother, Vista. The customisations come in the form of a Zip file with a series of folders that contain new skins for different areas of the OS. The enhancements include a Vista Action screen, Commanger, Calculator, Audio manager, Cube, Today theme, and more.

Installing everything onto your device takes a while and is a little complicated because you need to make sure that the files and folders are copied into the correct directories in Windows Mobile. There are text files with instructions inside each of the enhancement folders though, and the details are pretty clear.

Once you've got everything installed at setup the new skins are pretty impressive and while they don't replicate Vista exactly, they certainly provide a flavour of the latest Windows desktop OS. Particular favourites of mine are the dialer, which adorns your on-screen keypad with shiny Vistaness; the Vista Audio Manager, which makes it much easier to organise your music; and the gorgeous Windows Media Player skin.

If you've got the patience and know-how to configure it, Poorlyduck Vista Suit is the perfect way to make your Pocket PC look like a new desktop PC!

PocketMusic 5.0.6

Since the introduction of the iPhone into popular culture, it seems today that if you haven't got a decent music player on your mobile, you're a bit of a dork.

That's bad news for anyone with a Windows Mobile device, because the built-in version of Windows Media Player is looking a bit long-in-the-tooth now. Fear not though, because with the PocketMusic Player Bundle, you can replace the default audio player with something altogether cooler.

The software provides an amazing environment in which to enjoy digital music. Once installed via the PC set-up, it lodges itself in its own section on the Today screen, giving you instant access to basic playback controls, plus options such as Load, Shuffle, Repeat and an alarm clock.

That's not even half the story though, because by tapping on this section you'll open the full PocketMusic Player, where a bounty of treasures awaits you. The default interface boasts large, shiny buttons that facilitate touchscreen control of your music. Alternatively, you can apply a Winamp skin to the player, giving you a raft a cool features within a familiar GUI. Features such as a graphic equalizer, playlists, file information, sorting, preamp, and more.

This free version of PocketMusic lacks the powerful features of its bigger brother, PocketMusic Player Bundle, which boasts added goodies such as support for Ogg and WMA formats, extra bass, bookmarks, playlist organiser and alarm and sleep timer functions.

However it's still a decent version of the app which I reckon is one of the best audio player for Windows Mobile. If it had a decent help system, the program would score even higher.

Nevertheless, if you want to turn your Pocket PC into a all-singing, all-dancing MP3 player, I can't recommend PocketMusic highly enough.

Pocket DVD Wizard 5.3.5

It sounds impressive but Pocket DVD Wizard can reduce 4 DVD's to just 512MB in size without losing a great deal of quality.

This is great news if you're going away fro an extended period of time and want your favourite movies with you. The program works with both standard Pocket PCs and high resolution 640x480 VGA Pocket PCs. It allows you to select the image quality that you are satisfied with and watch the converted video in full screen mode without "letterbox" style black bars above and below the picture. The developers claim that it also works with Windows based Portable Media Center players, such as the Creative Labs Zen PMC or the iRiver PMP-120. This includes Windows based Smartphones such as the iJam and Motorola MPX handsets. Apart form the impressive compression ratios, what strikes you immediately is the ease of use of this program. There's very few clicks required to compress a DVD and it works pretty quickly compared to similar efforts. The fact that it supports to many output devices also distinguishes it from the rest - it can output to anything from a Pocket PC to an iPod or PSP. I also like the fact that it allows you to highly customise the ripping process, if you choose to, so that you can remove unnecessary files such as subtitles and extras.

There's not much to fault with Pocket DVD Wizard - if you like your movies on the go and have multiple devices, then you should look no further.

Pointui Home 2.1.06c

Don't get me wrong, I think the Pocket PC platform is awesome but, like many people, I find it a little cumbersome sometimes and the fact that I have to tap tiny icons with pixel precision can sometimes end up getting me down.

Pointui Home is designed to change all that, skinning the Windows Mobile interface to make it easy to control the basic functions of your device without having to so much as look at your stylus. i.e. by clicking directly with your fingers.

In order to achieve this Pointui uses a kind of 'shuffle' system as adopted by the HTC device, and not too dissimilar to the iPhone. It means that you can navigate your operating system using finger swipes, making the whole process of using your handheld much more intuitive and more enjoyable, to boot.

From the main program window you can make calls, access email and text messaging, and manage and control the functions of the media player. Certain elements of Windows Mobile have been completely reskinned, including the phone app, which gives a more of an iPhone feel to the call log. Other tools such as calendar and tasks haven't been reskinned but they are now easier to access.

What's more, the system settings are now right at your fingertips, rather than buried below a series of menus on your Pocket PC.

If you're fed up of the somewhat cumbersome Windows Mobile environment and stylus-based interface, Pointui offers a very interesting alternative that lets your fingers do the talking.

Delve into the menu system and you'll find even more treats. You can create bookmarks, toggle fullscreen mode, map shortcut keys, alter the fast forward/rewind step interval and organise playlists. All this, my friends, before you've even opened the 'Player Options' menu. Once you've done so, you can tinker with settings from crossfading effects to sleep timers.

For me this is, without question, the most fully-featured audio player for Windows Mobile. I would have given it five stars were it not for the fact it lacks an adequate Help section, something, I think is needed in an app of this magnitude.

Nevertheless, if you want to turn your Pocket PC into a all-singing, all-dancing MP3 player, I can't recommend PocketMusic highly enough.

Touch Shell Free 1.1.0.17

Personally, I don't find the Windows Mobile Today screen that bad, but looking at it every day can get a bit boring. So perhaps it's a good idea to freshen up your device by installing Touch Shell Free.

The application is designed to make your Pocket PC more usable, as well as adding rich graphics and 3D effects to your user interface. It definitely represents a more finger-friendly way of navigating Windows Mobile.

Touch Shell Free completely revamps the Today screen, adding shiny new menu icons along the bottom of the display and giving over the main chunk of the screen to the clock display. There are icons for home, contacts, file browser, weather, media player, and connectivity. Clicking any of these will produce a gorgeous animated transition and the menu for that item will be loaded.

The design of the contacts manager and file explorer sections is particularly impressive, because it facilitates faster and easier access through larger buttons. The media player also looks great, although ultimately it's just a one-screen facade for Windows Media Player. And I guess that's the crux of Touch Shell Free - it's offers a nice new way of navigating through Windows Mobile, but ultimately it doesn't change the functionality or usability of any of the core tools in the operating system.

Nevertheless, Touch Shell Free is well worth downloading for anyone who wants to make their Pocket PC look a bit cooler.
